The State Key Laboratory of Hydrology-Water Resources and Hydraulic Engineering (Hydro-Lab) was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology for its establishment in 2004, jointly supported by Hohai University (HHU) and Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute (NHRI). It passed the evaluation by the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2008 and 2013, respectively, and was awarded as the excellent state key laboratory in 2013.
The Hydro-Lab is characterized by combining innovative fundamental research on hydrology and hydraulic engineering with the development of key techniques for solving problems in major hydraulic engineering projects. It has always been operated under the policy of opening, exchanging, collaboration and competition in the environment whose developing principles are talents first, science topmost, open and sharing, harmony and innovation.
The research activities of Hydro-Lab currently cover 5 directions, including: (1) Rational allocation and efficient utilization of water resources; (2) Hydrological processes and disaster prevention and mitigation; (3) Evolution and protection of aquatic ecology and aquatic environment; (4) Integrated management and protection of estuarine and coastal regions; and (5) Hydraulic construction safety and disaster control.
The Hydro-Lab has a strong and sustainable scientific research staff with multi-disciplinary professionals of different ranks. Up till now, the laboratory has 80 fixed-term researchers, including 2 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 6 winners of the National Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars, 3“111 Program” base (Program of Introducing Talents of Discipline to Universities). 59 staff members are selected by national and provincial talent-programs, and over 32 staff members are now serving in international academic organizations.
The Hydro-Lab integrates the strength of HHU and NHRI, focusing on applied fundamental research on water-related issues and innovation in key techniques for dealing with hydraulic engineering problems. From 2008 to 2016, the Hydro-Lab has undertaken over 491 projects with a turnover of more than 684 million RMB in total. And 4496 papers affiliated to the Hydro-Lab have been published in national/international journals or conference proceedings, including 1195 indexed by SCI and 1071 by EI. Besides, there are totally 181 invention patents authorized and 84 software copyrights registered during this period.
The Hydro-Lab keeps developing and improving both indoor and field experimental facilities for supporting the research of the 5 research directions mentioned above. It now possesses 4 public experimental platforms, 5 experiment halls and 4 large-scale field experiment bases with advanced apparatuses and equipments, which are all open and available to the public researchers, and charged services etc., jointly supporting the scientific research about the hydrology water resources and hydraulic engineering, talent development, as well as international exchange and cooperation.
Additionally, the Hydro-Lab has become a vital gateway for academic communication between HHU, NHRI and the rest of the world. Good cooperation relations have been established between the Hydro-Lab and foreign organizations from many different countries such as America, France, Japan, Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, and so on. There were more than 300 people attending international academic activities and over 80 invited speeches presented in domestic and international conferences in the last six years.
The Hydro-Lab has become an important base for conducting applied and fundamental research on hydrology, water ecology and hydraulic engineering, providing solutions for major technique problems, and offering a platform of international academic exchange and cooperation for researchers both at home and abroad.
